Solar Plexus
Bringing together twelve critically acclaimed artists from London, Shanghai and Amsterdam, the MyPeople Project explores the subject of networking. The project is a collaboration between a group of self-selected artists, curators and event organisers with an exhibit,
The process will result in exhibitions in London, Amsterdam and Shanghai
In Shanghai the MyPeople Project is partnering with the V Art Center to host the exhibit Solar Plexus, opening on Friday, June 1st 2012. The solar plexus is a central network of nerves in the abdomen, and if enough force is applied, a hit to this area can even cause the heart to stop. In that vein, as the first tangible result of the MyPeople Project, and the product of collaboration between many participants, Solar Plexus is a key element in this endeavour. The exhibit will run for one month, highlighting both new and existing works from the participating artists. This will be the first time that most of these works have been shown in Shanghai. While all the artists involved are well established in their home countries, and have exhibited internationally, for several this will be their first time exhibiting in China.
Presenting work from these twelve established artists, while promoting this unique networking model with an open dialogue, and exchange of ideas, knowledge, skills and cultural experiences between both artists and audiences, locally and internationally. An online and offline combined platform will be used for the interactions between artists and audience.
The aim is to provide artists with a platform for extending their networks, and for learning how to work with different cultures and mentalities. This will be accomplished through direct interaction with other artists, galleries, workshops, various art professionals and audiences in Shanghai, London and Amsterdam.

MyPeople features diverse and critically acclaimed artists from the host cities in China, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. This eclectic group not only crosses geographical boundaries: it crosses boundaries of medium, scale, attitude and subject matter. The project includes the urban-scale work of Chinese artist Xu Zhifeng, whose mix of performance, intervention and installation challenges perceptions of the built environment, as well as the architectural, site-specific concerns of Peter Vink, described by critic Manuela Lietti as operating ‘in spaces other artists would consider too out of reach’. Alternatively, Lu Yang works on a more anatomical scale: controversially probing, invading and overturning our attitudes to discrete biological entities, while Ellen Nolan's work explores the tensions and shifting dynamics between her subjects.
In MyPeople one will find artists who reinterpret traditional media, such as in the sculptural creations of Anika Schwarzlose and Colm Lally, the works of Wu Juehui, the photographic work of Irina Birger, or Yaron Lapid’s video pieces. In addition there are those who exploit current technological developments, including Shanghai artist Aaajiao’s fascination with the transition of data into reality and vice versa. In many cases, the transgressive and collaborative agenda of the exhibition is present within the work of individual artists, and often within particular pieces: Brian Mckenna’s pieces traverse the human senses with artworks that combine audio, visual and physical installations. In a parallel vein, Charbel Ackerman examines the points where spatial representation, ideology and language intersect, combining sharp insight with a refreshing sense of humour.
